The Dillinger Troop Transport represents the Dillinger group’s approach in military vehicle design within the Tron universe, introducing a new level of intensity and innovation.
Originally conceptualized by Fausto de Martini, the vehicle underwent a dramatic redesign due to shifts in the story and budget constraints. Under the guidance of production designer Darren Gilford, the new direction emphasized a lower profile and high-speed capability. The updated design features a deployable "light ram" that can extend forward to clear obstacles when needed.
A key feature of the vehicle is its mechanical height adjustment. In its elevated position, the canopy splits open, and the deck extends outward like a lower jaw, aligning with the storyline’s requirements. Darren and I created a preliminary animation to illustrate this concept, which the SFX team then translated into a functional mechanical design. We subsequently integrated the mechanical elements with a “Tron aesthetic” to maintain visual coherence.
An interesting detail is that the tank turret profile of the Dillinger Troop Transport pays homage to the original 1982 Tron tank turret. This nod to legendary designer Syd Mead is a tribute to his invaluable contributions to the Tron universe, underscoring his impact on its iconic design language.
